[August] SummerfestAug 3rd, 2012 | By NEF staff | Category: Flavor of the Month
Barbeque is different in August than it is in June or July. Here in the Northeast, when the temperature first begins to climb and we know for sure it won’t snow (it’s a toss up during the rest of the year), we jump right in, clean off the grills and get to cooking whatever we can find as often as we can. But by August, we’re not so enamored of simple burgers, chicken, and steaks. Meh. We’re looking for something new and exciting.
Summerfest (formerly Celebrate Maine Festival and Mainely BBQ) at the Raitt Farm Homestead in Eliot, ME, comes at a perfect time. On Saturday, August 11th from 10am – 6pm and Sunday, August 12th from 10am – 5pm, you can pull yourself out of the BBQ doldrums and get some new ideas (and flavors) to step up your grilling game. This event, sponsored by the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KSBC) and the New England Barbeque Society (NEBS), features teams competing for the coveted MGCB Grand Champion Title.
Our staff will be there all weekend (stop by our booth and say “Hi!”) and we hope to be able to see some of the excitement scheduled. Throughout the weekend, there will be horse drawn wagon rides, a colonial encampment, barrel tractor rides, homemade food (including BBQ vendors, of course), artisans, crafters, a marketplace, grilling & cooking demos, the Shipyard Brew Garden, and so much more.
Events on Saturday include a woodsman competition and a kids’ BBQ contest. Sunday is when things get serious and teams square off in high stakes BBQ competition for the MGCB Grand Champion Title.
Cost of admittance is $6 per person and children aged six and under get in free. Click here for more information and daily schedules. We’ll see you there!
